Cross Your i's and Dot Your T's: Workshop Guidance for Perfect Project Delivery, Every Project, Every Time 9:30am 10:45am "I can't open this document--I don't have the right fonts."
"I can't find what I need in the layers. They are so unorganized."
"I can't forward the file you sent me; it's too large."
"This looks great, but my last round of changes aren't showing up."
The last thing you want after working for 25 hours on a project is for the client to come back and let you know that there are things wrong with the project files you sent. As designers, videographers, editors, and production artists, we not only have to be original and creative, but we have to master the skills of efficient workflow so we aren't running around in circles. This session is a grab bag of workflow checklists and hard-learned lessons, ready to use in a classroom setting. You won't want to start or package another project without using something you learn here.

Shifting Careers in Illustration 2:00pm 3:00pm Using my work experiences over the course of four decades I will discuss options for making a living as an illustrator. To a large degree this relies on finding one’s niche within this broad field. Also to be covered: how changing technologies over the last decade have drastically altered the profession. With the explosion of social media, where everyone is suddenly an art director and copyright laws have been thrown out the window, commissioned illustration has become less in-demand, and less profitable. Nowadays illustrators have to reinvent if they are to survive economically. Illustrators who create moving, web-animated imagery is one such option. Arts/AV/AVACA Martaban Tim Carroll

Breathing Life Into Adobe Illustrator WORKSHOP 9:30am 12:30pm This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of Adobe’s release of Illustrator. In 1987 Adobe’s product pitch stressed Illustrator’s ability to “Get The Jaggies Out.” As opposed to pixel-based imaging software like Photoshop, Illustrator offered sharpness and infinitely-scalable output, and it did so via incredibly small file sizes. One unfortunate byproduct of Illustrator’s sharpness and mechanical perfection comes in the difficulty of “breathing life” into those too-perfect vector files. Through a variety of techniques and artistic sensibilities, funkiness can be integrated I will share some of these techniques in this workshop, while giving an overview of other illustrators who have, over the last thirty years, wrangled personality into Illustrator.  Arts/AV/AVACA Martaban Tim Carroll

No Rules Photography: A Spiral Curriculum in a Paperless World 3:00pm 4:15pm As we move deeper into the paperless world a missing creative link must be restored so that we do not lose touch with our creative nature. We must reteach students the process of claiming and owning their paperless work and making it their own.
In the paper world we write our names on the top right corner and suddenly the paper belongs to me in a very personal way. When people marry we exchange rings as a symbol of belonging together out loud. When we want to claim extra seats at an event we may use a personal item that symbolically claims that we somehow own it or that we will use it temporality.
Students must reach into cyber space and mark up their images so that their thinking is evident to them out loud in words. This annotating process opens up new discussions, new ideas and promotes deeper thinking about an image at hand. When we promote annotating an image, we are saying that we want you to mark it up, we might want you to tear it up, to interact with it if we have to in order to communicate an idea. The thinking process immediately opens up the use of the Spiral Curriculum where students begin to make real life connections that arise from having different conversations other than what is pictured. You will gain this knowledge and an understanding when you attend this workshop.
